Initiation to archeological excavations
As part of the 2026 Archaeology Days, the Musée du Pays Châtillonnais – Vix Treasure will open its doors free of charge on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Throughout the weekend, visitors are invited to discover archaeology through an immersive, hands-on activity suitable for all ages. Children and adults aged 7 and over can learn the basics of archaeological excavation using two specially designed educational excavation pits.
These discovery areas recreate a real burial site and allow participants to uncover a variety of archaeological remains, including replica skeletons, ceramics, jewellery, and other artefacts. This engaging experience offers a practical introduction to the work of archaeologists and highlights the careful observation, patience, and methodology required to study the remains of the past.
In connection with the exhibition dedicated to Kiki de Montparnasse, the museum will also present a retrospective on archaeology in the 1920s. This display will explore some of the era’s major archaeological discoveries, the growing role of women in the field, and the methodological and technological advances that transformed excavation practices and archaeological research.
This journey into archaeology during the age of Kiki de Montparnasse will provide insight into the intellectual and scientific context of the Roaring Twenties, a period marked by both remarkable modernity and groundbreaking discoveries that continue to shape our understanding of the past.
Free admission – activity open to all.
Visitors will also enjoy free access to the museum’s permanent collections and temporary exhibitions throughout this exceptional weekend.
