Le Musée
Supported by the Communauté de Communes du Pays Châtillonnais, the museum moved to the premises of the former Notre-Dame abbey in 2009. This move has enabled the exhibition space to be enlarged and embellished.
The richness of the Châtillonnais region, the exceptional activity of the Archaeological Society and a large number of donors have resulted in a collection of archaeological and historical artefacts worthy of the greatest institutions.
The discovery of the tomb of the Lady of Vix in 1953 established the museum's international reputation. From then on, the ‘Treasure of Vix’, with its imposing bronze crater, established the museum's reputation. In addition, the large number of objects discovered throughout the 20th century on the region's archaeological sites gradually built up one of the most representative collections of Celtic and Gallo-Roman artefacts in France.
The museum's policy is one of continual renewal and mediation, marked by a series of events designed for a variety of audiences, young and old alike. It offers several temporary exhibitions a year, original cultural and entertainment programmes on national days (European Museum Night, Heritage Days, Archaeology Days, Science Festival), family events (historical reconstructions, parties and games) and educational workshops where learning is fun.
The museum puts its dynamism at the service of all audiences to help them discover the archaeological and historical heritage of the Châtillonnais region.
